The RCM Handbook provides the following free RCM software downloads to help your organization run the RCM process.

The RCM Process involves answering the 7 Questions according to the criteria defined in SAE JA1011. The first 4 questions are answered via a FMEA , and the final 3 via a decision logic diagram.

So from this priniciple we can create a workbook that joins the FMEA and decision logic output.

Tailoring

There are now quite a few prescribed RCM processes with specific material to help you perform RCM. However, we have found that it usually works better when an organization tailors the process to their setup. We must, however, remain within the criteria of SAE JA1011.

FMEA

The FMEA process is well defined, with little room for tailoring. You must identify the functions, functional failures and failure modes. However, how you capture the effects is open to some tailoring. You may wish to separate local, higher and end effects, specifically capture hidden effects or have one entry for effects, but provide your team with clear instructions on how to fill it out.

Criticality

Criticality is not part of the SAE JA1011 process, but is often captured in RCM. You should decide if you wish to keep it in the process, and if so, decide the exact wording and values for the severity, occurrence and detectability scores.

Decision Logic Diagram

To meet SAE JA1011, you must ask if the failure mode is hidden/evident and then determine the consequence - is it safety/environmental, operational or non-operational. When selecting the applicable maintenance strategy, you must consider condition-based, scheduled overhaul, scheduled replacement, failure finding, one-time change (redesign) and run-to-failure maintenance strategies. But you should decide the specific wording of each question. Ideally, each question will be enhanced by a clear explanation and, where needed, decision criteria.

Workbook

Once you decide how to capture effects and criticality and have tailored your decision logic, you can tailor the workbook, to capture the output.
